The spore trap can be flexibly configured to sample for user defined periods, for example a minimum daily sample period, or a single or multiple user defined start and stop periods within any 24-hr period into each pot.
At the end of the sampling period, the captured specimen is moved through a series of processes to access and extract any pathogen antibodies collected. The way we collect, store, and process each individual sample means that our machine can be configured to test for multiple pathogens from each specimen.
This means that we don’t have to wait for another day’s sample to test for a different crop disease and this significantly reduces any time delay before alerting you to a potential crop attack.

Installing the LFD Auto Spore Trap on a building or raised platform provides an effective early warning system and allows growers to react swiftly to impending crop infections by spraying only when required. The ability to load the machine with more than one type of disease test marker means that multiple crops can be protected at the same time using one device.
Rather than spraying regularly on a preventative basis regardless of infection risk, the early warning reactive approach means less chemicals are required resulting in considerable cost savings and less harmful chemicals being used unnecessarily. This also means significantly lowering the impact of pesticides on other non-harmful or beneficial species.
Crop Disease Detection – How it works
To identify specific pathogens airborne particles first need to be obtained. Once collected, the LFD auto spore trap agitates the spore sample enabling the machine to access the antibodies associated with specific diseases. A small sub-sample is transferred to a separate area where we add a liquid which prevents contamination from algae or molds. This also stabilises and nourishes the sample to keep it viable.
Here you can determine which diseases for your crops you wish to monitor and protect against. The relevant test reagent for these given diseases (e.g., Sclerotinia, Phytophthora Infestans, Yellow Rust etc) is added as is oil to ensure the sample remains viable during the next series of processes.
We then heat the sample and iteratively check for changes in the pathogen concentration. If the sample meets certain criteria for a positive result our system will send out an email and SMS alert to the configured contacted details. You then make the decision to spray to protect the crop.
The instrument is extremely simple to operate and is designed to run without intervention by the user for periods up to 8 days. Sampling periods can be set up by the user to suit their requirements through a simple user menu built into the unit.
The LFD auto trap can be monitored through a web portal or be set to trigger emails and SMS, which can be configured to alert the user of any issues e.g., the test vials need to be replaced, consumables need to be restocked or if the unit has an error etc.
Crop Disease Risk Dashboard
Weather conditions are also a major contributor to infection risk, so the LFD auto spore trap from Agri Samplers Ltd also has its own on-board weather station which relays the weather data to a database. This weather data is combined with risk models and processed to inform on infection risk.
This data is transmitted automatically over-the-air using the unit’s internal 4G router, fitted with an AnyNet Secure SIM, where it is analysed, and the information is overlaid on a map. This AnyNet SIM is not tied to any particular network so it will use the best available network in the area where it is located.
Within in a matter of minutes the results are available to growers providing an accurate picture on their crop protection risk before any infection has taken place.

Potato late blight (Phytophthora infestans) is currently the main pathogen covered by the system, and we are currently developing and testing a range of other different LFD reagents to detect: –
• Sclerotinia spores, which affect oilseed rape (canola) and a range of vegetables,
• Yellow Rust of wheat,
• Sugar beet pathogens.

The instrument is powered by mains electricity so is generally situated higher up on or near farm buildings. This does not affect the quality of crop detection as airborne spores travel great distances and at various heights above the ground. High placement also helps minimise the impact of dust caused by farm machinery.
