The Rotorod Spore Sampler, from Agri Samplers Ltd, has been designed and produced to remotely collect spores, pollen, and other airborne particles autonomously by way of a weatherproof and flexible programmable controller. This enables detailed airborne pathogen and particle densities to be collected efficiently for field or Lab-based research or as an early warning alert for farmers, growers and agronomists of impending crop disease attacks.

The Roto Spore Sampler has been designed and produced by us at Agri Samplers Ltd to collect spores, pollen, and other airborne particles autonomously by way of a weatherproof and flexible programmable controller. The Roto sampler can be programmed to sample continuously or for defined on and off periods within the sampling window set for each day. Spore collection is fast and effective, and regular analysis of the samples can provide detailed insights into spore movement and also early warning for farmers and growers to allow fast preventative treatment for crop protection. Conversely this early warning system also means less need for preventative spraying ‘just in case’, helping to protect the environment and saving significant costs in chemicals.
The new Roto Spore Sampler design incorporates an improved controller, doing away with the need to replace alkaline batteries every few weeks. This in turn means less downtime and removes the need to reprogramme the device each time the batteries needed to be changed. The onboard battery now recharges itself via the 12v lead acid battery (not supplied) required to power the motor.
The Roto Spore Sampler onboard controller has also been upgraded to include a solar charge controller which means the unit can now accept a max 35W solar panel input to keep the 12V battery fully charged, extending the spore sampling capacity while reducing maintenance time.
Without the optional solar panel, the 12V battery will need to be replaced and recharged every week, or sooner depending on the sampling times and length of each sampling cycle.
In terms of spore capture performance, the rotating arms carrying the sampling collectors rotate at 1700 rpm, sampling an equivalent of 75 litres of air per minute. The Roto Spore Sampler arms and a fan fixed to the rotating arm means that the arms are continually pulling in new unsampled air in from below and expelling the sampled air out through the vents in the rain shield.
Over longer periods (more than 12-24 hours, depending on air source spore-load), the sampling rods surfaces may become filled with spore particles which will cause the trap efficiency to decline. Intermittent sampling periods can be programmed through the controller to overcome this.
While Rotorod type spore samplers have been around for a few years, historically some of them have not been very reliable.
